Sabers for sabering Champagne

Sabers for sabering champagne

The champagne briquet saber is deeply rooted in the tradition of sabrage, a ceremonial gesture historically associated with celebration, victory, and shared moments of success.

Originating in Napoleonic times, sabrage symbolizes confidence, mastery, and the joy of celebration, performed with a controlled and elegant motion along the bottle’s seam.

What is a Champagne Saber?

A champagne saber is a ceremonial tool designed to open a bottle of champagne using the traditional technique known as sabrage.

This spectacular gesture, popularized during the Napoleonic era, symbolizes celebration, victory, and refined French art de vivre.

A proper champagne saber is not a weapon. It is a ceremonial object designed for elegance, balance, and safety.

--------------

The History of Champagne Sabrage

The tradition of sabrage dates back to Napoleonic cavalry officers who celebrated victories by opening champagne with their sabers.

Today, the ritual remains a symbol of elegance and French heritage.

Sabrage works because of internal bottle pressure — not because the blade cuts the glass.

Step 1 – Chill the bottle

Temperature should be 40–46°F (6–8°C).

Step 2 – Remove the foil and wire cage

Step 3 – Hold the bottle at a 30° angle

Step 4 – Place the blade flat along the bottle seam

Step 5 – Slide the saber firmly toward the neck

The pressure inside the bottle cleanly separates the cork and collar.

Always perform sabrage in an open, safe space.

--------------

Is Sabrage Safe?

Yes — when performed correctly.

  • Bottle must be properly chilled
  • Movement must be fluid and confident
  • Area must be clear

The blade does not need to be sharp.
