Charter of Authenticity & Origin
At BALP FRANCE, authenticity is not a marketing claim.
It is a historical, technical, and ethical commitment, passed down through generations and applied to every piece we produce.
This charter clearly and transparently defines our principles regarding origin, manufacturing, and compliance, in order to provide institutional, professional, and private clients with accurate, verifiable information that fully complies with regulatory and ceremonial requirements.
1. Origin and Respect for Historical Models
BALP sabres, swords, and accessories are developed based on official and historically referenced models.
- Shapes, proportions, balance, and decorative elements are studied in strict accordance with military and ceremonial traditions.
- No model is reinterpreted for commercial or aesthetic purposes.
- Each piece preserves its symbolic function, institutional identity, and historical legitimacy.
BALP FRANCE never claims an origin or tradition that cannot be historically substantiated.
2. Mastered Traditional Manufacturing
BALP FRANCE favors traditional manufacturing, based on the mastery of essential skills and techniques specific to ceremonial edged weapons:
- Forging according to traditional methods
- Controlled heat treatments
- Demanding polishing and finishing processes
- Precise assembly and fitting of components
Each stage is carried out or supervised within a controlled manufacturing process, ensuring consistency, durability, and coherent quality standards.
Artisanal Production at the Heart of Our Identity
At BALP France, artisanal production is not merely a method — it is a true philosophy of creation. Unlike standardized industrial mass production, where items are manufactured in large automated quantities, our sabres, swords and ceremonial accessories are crafted by highly skilled artisans who master techniques passed down through generations.
Artisanal production is defined by:
- Technical and manual mastery: each stage — from shaping the blade to the final polishing — relies on traditional expertise, where tools, hands and experience come together to create pieces of exceptional quality.
- Precision and attention to detail: far removed from mechanical repetition, each piece reflects controlled craftsmanship, ensuring finish, durability and historical fidelity that cannot be replicated identically in industrial series.
- Transmission of knowledge: our master craftsmen preserve and pass on a living heritage, making every creation not only a ceremonial object, but also a bearer of deeply rooted traditions and symbolic meaning.
This artisanal approach lies at the core of BALP France’s identity: a production model where human skill, gesture and history combine to forge pieces of authenticity, significance and lasting value.
3. Transparency of Origin
BALP FRANCE is committed to honest, verifiable communication regarding the origin of its products.
- We never claim national or local manufacturing when it does not reflect the reality of the operations performed.
- All references to origin, craftsmanship, or tradition are based on concrete, traceable elements.
- We reject any deliberate ambiguity that could mislead the client.
Origin is never implied — it is assumed, explained, and documented.
4. Quality Control and ISO 9001 Certification
- BALP FRANCE operates under an ISO 9001–certified quality management system, ensuring:
- full control of production processes,
- operational traceability,
- systematic product inspection,
- continuous improvement of methods and standards
Each sabre or sword undergoes a rigorous final inspection covering:
- model conformity,
- material quality,
- finishing standards,
- assembly and presentation.
- A quality certificate accompanies every delivery.
5. Commitment to Clients and Institutions
BALP FRANCE serves institutions, armed forces, military academies, official corps, and demanding clients, for whom authenticity is a fundamental requirement.
We are committed to:
- delivering products compliant with regulatory and ceremonial standards,
- guaranteeing consistent quality,
- ensuring clear traceability,
- meeting announced delivery timelines,
- offering controlled personalization options (engraving, markings) without compromising the historical integrity of the model.
6. A Signature of Trust
At BALP FRANCE, we do not sell an assumed origin — we deliver real, controlled, and certified craftsmanship.
This charter represents a lasting commitment to our clients and partners, reflecting the vision of a house devoted to historical truth, manufacturing excellence, and respect for tradition.

Identification and history
We regularly receive requests regarding the identification, origin, or history of antique sabres and swords.
However, we regret to inform you that we are not in a position to provide individualized expertise for the purpose of identifying or authenticating sabres or swords owned by private individuals.
Limits of our identification capabilities
Even when a sabre or sword bears the BALP France mark on the blade, we are unable to precisely determine its origin, date of manufacture, or historical background.
Although BALP has been producing sabres and swords since 1830, certain periods of interrupted activity have resulted in the loss or absence of usable archives. Consequently, no internal documentary base currently allows for the reliable identification of antique pieces.

Advice for beginning your research
Research into the history of a sabre or sword generally begins with identifying the manufacturer. However, it is important to recall a key point:
not all sabres and swords manufactured in France are necessarily BALP productions, even when they display similar characteristics.
Identifying the manufacturer
Manufacturers of bladed weapons typically applied an identification mark to the blade, most often on the flat near the guard. This mark provides an initial clue, although its interpretation may be complex.
We recommend using multiple search engines and documentary sources in order to cross-reference available information. For example, when researching a BALP sabre or sword, the following search queries may be helpful:
- BALP sabre Saint-Étienne France
- Original BALP sword
- History of BALP sabres and swords
These searches may lead you to comparable pieces presented on specialized websites, in historical catalogues, or within private collections, allowing you to refine your analysis of the origin and possibly the value of your sabre or sword.
-----------------
Other research avenues
You may also consider:
- contacting associations or circles of bladed weapon collectors who may be able to guide your research;
- consulting an antiquarian specializing in antique arms.
Please note, however, that BALP maintains no partnership or official relationship with these organizations or professionals. We are therefore unable to guarantee the accuracy, impartiality, or reliability of the information they may provide.
Antiquarians are commercial actors; it is recommended that you exercise discernment and caution when selecting your contacts and evaluating the information received.
